The sustainable future of Tulum in 2024

In 2024, the future of Tulum is shaped by a big sustainability project. This project aims to turn Tulum into a leading example of eco-friendly tourism in the country. The National Regulatory Improvement Commission has started a project to make Tulum a Potential Sustainable Tourism Development Zone (ZDTS). This new idea hopes to protect the natural environment while boosting the economy.

Tulum: A Sustainable Tourism Destination

Designating Tulum as a ZDTS means that the municipality will adopt sustainable tourism practices, focusing on a green economy. According to the federal Ministry of Tourism, these zones are specific areas in the country that stand out for their natural or cultural characteristics, attracting tourists from around the world. The decree covers an area of 3,486 hectares, including the municipal seat and a coastal zone of 6.9 kilometers.

With a population of 33,428 inhabitants, according to the 2020 Population and Housing Census, Tulum is gearing up for orderly and sustainable growth.

Tourist Activities and Environmental Regulations

Within the designated ZDTS area, various activities and tourist services will be allowed as long as they comply with relevant environmental regulations. These activities include:

  • Diversification of services and attractions: Offering a wider range of tourist experiences.
  • Improvements in accommodation quality: Promoting the development of accommodations with a focus on sustainability.
  • Promotion of tourism projects: Encouraging projects that align with sustainable development.

Resources and regulations for sustainability

The Tulum ZDTS project aims not only to foster economic growth but also to ensure that this growth is sustainable in the long term. This will be achieved through a more orderly allocation of resources and the use of urban regulation instruments such as the Urban Development Plan and the Local Ecological Management Program, which will incorporate sustainable development criteria throughout the area.

Corporate collaborations for a green future

Renowned national companies are collaborating to make Tulum a more sustainable place. For example, the beverage multinational AJEMEX has signed an agreement with local environmental organizations to reduce the plastic footprint in Tulum, highlighting a joint effort towards sustainability.
