In 2025, Tulum is on track to make history as a record-breaking travel destination within the Mexican Caribbean. Known for its memorable beaches, rich Mayan heritage, and focus on wellness, Tulum has evolved from a hidden paradise to one of the most desirable places to visit. This growth is supported by the recent expansion of the Felipe Carrillo Puerto airport, which now offers nearly double its previous routes.
The improved accessibility is enhancing Tulum’s appeal, drawing more visitors from around the world and creating a positive impact on the entire region.
While Tulum is on the rise, Cancun remains the leading entry point for international travelers to the Mexican Caribbean. With the arrival of the Maya Train, a new era of connectivity has become a reality in the region. During peak travel seasons, the Cancun International Airport reports as many as 5,000 arrivals each weekend. According to Rossy Rodríguez, Commercial Manager of Amstar DMC for North America, most of these travelers come from the United States, making up 85% of the tourists, with Canada as the second biggest source of visitors.
The combined popularity of the Mexican Caribbean stretches across the coast, offering a mix of all-inclusive resorts and unique travel experiences, creating a dynamic range of choices for all types of tourists. And also, a must-see opportunity for investors.
Tulum: A preferred destination for Europeans
Interestingly, Tulum has recently gained more interest from Spanish travelers. According to a report from Skyscanner, a global travel platform, Tulum ranks as the second most preferred destination for Spanish tourists looking for unique and immersive experiences. Jorge Molina, Director of Tourism and Economy in Tulum, noted that many European visitors are drawn to Tulum’s community-centered experiences, as well as its focus on wellness and relaxation. Skyscanner’s survey shows that European travelers increasingly favor destinations where they can connect with nature and enjoy a slower, more meaningful pace of travel.
In response to this demand, Tulum plans to strengthen its promotional efforts in Europe, especially at Fitur, one of the world’s largest travel fairs. Molina shared that their goal is to attract more winter travelers from Europe and to start the new year with a strong presence in the luxury and high-end travel markets. Ads and features in specialized travel magazines are part of the strategy, positioning Tulum as a premier destination for unique and quality experiences.
Tulum’s steady rise as a global destination is a testament to the area’s unique charm and the demand for destinations that go beyond traditional tourism. As Tulum continues to grow and evolve, it stands ready to welcome more travelers in 2025 who are eager to explore its beauty, history, and culture.
